Are you tired of your high energy bills? Could your home be more energy-efficient? In our opinion, insulation is one of the best ways to help maximize your home’s energy efficiency, and the attic is one of the best places to insulate!
Attics and lofts are the biggest culprits of heat loss — but not if you have the proper amount of insulation! Tidewater Insulators can install various types of insulation in your attic, including:

Though you may not go up in your attic a lot because it’s probably cluttered with old holiday decorations, clothes you don’t need and other miscellaneous items, it’s important to insulate it. In fact, failing to ensure you have the right amount of insulation in your attic can hinder your energy efficiency attempts.
There is no “right” type of insulation specifically made for attics. That said, in our experience, certain types of insulation have distinct characteristics. Spray insulation, for instance, is superior at filling small cracks and holes and covering uneven spacing between floor joists and around wiring, piping and ductwork. Fiberglass insulation effectively stops heat transfer, preventing heat from leaking out of your warm house into the cold winter air! And last but not least, cellulose insulation has similar qualities to fiberglass and is great for re-insulating all areas in your home, including the attic.

If your attic does not have enough insulation, it will be quite cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The temperature of the rooms below the attic may also be affected, raising your heating and cooling costs.
As long as your current insulation is not wet, moldy or damaged by pests, you can likely keep it in place and add more to it. Just don’t add any insulation with kraft facing or a vapor barrier. Our technicians at Tidewater Insulators can evaluate your attic and determine if your current insulation is in good condition or if it needs to be removed.
Several insulation types can work well in the attic, depending on how you plan to use the insulation and your installation budget. Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass makes insulating and air sealing the attic quick work, but loose insulation is not ideal for finished spaces. Fiberglass batts are easy to install but may be too thick to use under a finished floor. Spray foam can seal and insulate in one step, and it offers high R-values per inch, making it great for finished spaces, but it is a bit more costly than the alternatives.
An R-value represents a material’s insulating ability or its resistance to the flow of heat. In Virginia, the recommended R-value for attics is R-38 to R-60. As for the rest of the home, R-13 to R-15 is recommended for 2-by-4-inch walls, R-19 to R-21 is recommended for 2-by-6-inch walls and floors or crawl spaces should receive R-25 to R-30.
Different insulation materials offer different R-values per inch. Your technician can advise you on how best to achieve a certain R-value in a particular space.
It depends on the condition of the crawl space and the type of insulation. Crawl spaces tend to be more prone to moisture than attics, so fiberglass insulation may not work as well. Closed-cell spray foam would work well, as would open-cell spray foam.
