Many homeowners know they need to insulate their attics, but ventilation is just as important. In fact, attic insulation wouldn’t be as effective without the right ventilation. The best attic is one that is insulated and sealed.

Attic Ventilation
Proper attic ventilation systems provides a continual flow of outside air through the attic, which helps the insulation do its job better and helps keep the attic cooler so moisture doesn’t build up and cause problems.
How Much & Where to Vent
How much attic ventilation you need will depend on the size of your attic. In general, 1 square foot of vent is needed for every 300 square feet of attic space. More ventilation can be used if there isn’t a vapor barrier in this area. It’s best to use vents in different locations, some up higher on your roof and some lower—this way, air can flow in one and out the other, keeping your attic at the right temperature.
Attic ventilation is important because it can help:
- Prevent moisture problems
- Keep mold and mildew from developing
- Prevent wood rot
- Improve the overall efficiency of your AC
- Prevent ice dams or gutter and roof problems (which can occur in the winter if your attic isn’t cool enough and the ice and snow on the roof melt and then refreeze)
Proper attic ventilation is just as important as proper insulation installation. In fact, if you have insulation installed in an unventilated attic, the space can still be overheated and stuffy (and make the rest of your home uncomfortable too).
Other Important Information
In many homes, it’s not ideal to cool the attic with the air conditioner. Pulling conditioned air out of the house and up into the attic not only uses more energy and can cause your utility bills to increase, but it also makes your AC work harder, which can increase the risk of a costly breakdown later on.
Also, make sure insulation doesn’t cover any soffit vents! Soffit and rafter vents are important in maintaining airflow and facilitating proper attic ventilation.
